Welcome to Alice's web page!
History enthralls me, especially history that might have involved my
relatives. So browsing thorugh sites like the
Photograph Archives at the J. Willard Marriott Library, University of Utah
, and especially
The Utah History Encyclopedia
is a treat.
For example, I can read about
Eliza Roxcy Snow
, the acknowledged leader of Mormon pioneer women of the nineteenth century,
and a shirttail relative of mine. And, the
Castle Gate Mine Disaster
which not only created "The Emerging Social Worker and the Distribution of the
Castle Gate Relief Fund" -- the first example of social work in the United
States -- but also claimed the husband of the woman who raised my orphaned
mother, and later me, in my early childhood.
Perhaps it's genetics; or spending the happiest days of my childhood with that loving woman, Emma Noakes Huff; or an aspect of loving history so much, but family history also absorbs my interest. In 1996 I spent hours with my Aunt Bea in Salt Lake City, picking her brain for any family remembrances she could come up with. My daughter then put it on computer and in checking some facts with Uncle Melvin Woodland started a maelstrom of e-mail and snail-mail correspondence of family history and photos .
I have a vintage postcard collection which I haven't added to since the 1970s. Too busy with other things.
I have a definitive talent for gardening which my
daughter
does not share! The
Garden Escape
site has a useful hardiness zone locator by zip code as well as an online
catalog.
The
Time Life
Garden Encyclopedia is an excellent resource, too.
